Rookie of the Year 2018

Has someone new to teaching mathematics joined your staff?
Are they doing a great job?

Please nominate that mathematics educator for VCTM Rookie of the Year!
We plan to award one elementary teacher (K-5), one middle grades teacher (6-8) and one high school teacher (9-12) the Rookie of the Year Award at our annual fall meeting.
The only criterion, beyond doing amazing things in the classroom, is that the awardees be in their first three years of teaching.
The winners will be invited to this year’s VCTM Fall Conference (no charge), receive free VCTM membership for the following year, be requested to write an article for the eNewsletter, and be invited to present at the following VCTM Fall Conference.  In addition there will be a small cash award and certificate given to recipients.
To support a candidate for this award, be on the lookout for a link to an online form in the next eNewsletter.  You will be asked to include a letter of recommendation as part of your nomination.  The deadline for nominating an outstanding Rookie of the Year is June 1, 2018.

Second Annual Vermont Statewide Math Fair 2018

The Vermont Council of Teachers of Mathematics is proud to announce our sponsorship for the Second Annual Statewide Math Fair. We would like to welcome all Vermont students to participate in this event, which will again be hosted at the University of Vermont on April 7, 2018.

We call upon all K-12 teachers and parents to encourage any of their students to submit a project. The registration deadline for math fair projects is February 15, 2018. Students can register quickly and easily through our online form.

Last year we found that this event generated a lot of excitement about mathematics while also providing students an opportunity to attain evidence for proficiency in content and transferable skills through a more flexible pathway and low-stakes competition. Building on last year's successes, we're offering even more detailed information on registration, project idea generation, scoring criteria and more. This all can be found at the VCTM event page.

We hope you will consider getting your students involved in this exciting math opportunity!

Report on 2017 VCTM Fall Conference

In October 2017, VCTM was joined by educators from around the region for a day of thoughtful collaboration in some important current topics in mathematics education. On the premise of "Math is For Everyone," our attendees engaged in dialogue on a diversity of K-12 topics, from equity & access in the mathematics classroom, to personalized learning, to proficiency-based grading and learning & more. While VCTM hopes that all attending walked away with newfound knowledge and renewed ideas for best practices in mathematics learning and teaching, VCTM reflects fondly on this successful event. With appreciation to St. Michael’s College for hosting our event, much thanks to our participating vendors, and a special gratitude to our many participants that offered feedback, we’re proud to have produced another captivating conference and look forward to fall 2018!
