VCTM Math Morsels
Various zones throughout Vermont - Late March through early April
VCTM would like invite you and your colleagues to attend our Math Morsels being offered in the near future throughout the state. VCTM zone representatives will be hosting these professional-social events among math educators such as yourselves into late March and early April. Registering is simple and takes little time: determine the location and date that work best for you and as soon as you are able contact the hosting zone rep. to RSVP. There is NO cost for attending!

VCTM Second Annual Statewide Math Fair
University of Vermont - April 7
Less than one month remains until the second annual statewide math fair, which will again be hosted at the University of Vermont in Votey Hall. Registration is closed for project submissions at this time, however, VCTM is currently seeking help in the form of volunteers at this exciting event for Vermont students. Whether you are a practicing or retired mathematics educator, preservice teacher, or come from a STEM background, we welcome you to join us as a judge of student work or simply an extra set of hands for set-up and break-down of this event. If you’re available and interested, we’d ask that you let us know you are coming by submitting a quick online form:
If you have a student presenting a project at this year’s math fair, be sure to visit the Math Fair event page on the VCTM website. The same great resources (project guidelines, potential project topics, judging criteria) remain but the website has since been updated to include important event-day directions and even access to campus maps to ensure a safe travel to the UVM campus and smooth registration for all participants.

VCTM Rookie of the Year
VCTM has officially opened submissions for nominations for the annual Rookie of the Year Award!
The only criterion, beyond doing amazing things in the classroom, is that the awardees be in their first three years of teaching. One elementary teacher (K-5), one middle grades teacher (6-8), and one high school teacher (9-12) will be selected for this award.
Recipients will be invited to attend the fall conference (at no charge) where they will be announced and recognized as Rookie of the Year. They will receive free VCTM membership for the following year, be requested to write an article for the eNewsletter, and VCTM will offer them an invitation to present at the following VCTM Fall Conference. In addition there will be a small cash award and certificate given to recipients.
Submissions will be accepted through June 1, 2018. You will be asked to include a letter of recommendation as part of your nomination. You can submit your nominations through our online form linked below and posted VCTM website.
Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST)
Do you know an excellent elementary mathematics teacher?
Please nominate them for this prestigious award! The PAEMST organization is accepting nominations in the 2017-2018 school year for teachers of mathematics in grades K-6. The nomination process requires you to fill out an online form at www.paemst.org. The teacher you nominate will be notified about how to further apply, with the possibility of winning a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation!
You may consider nominating a colleague or even self-nominate for this award. If you have further questions, take a look at the PAEMST information flyer or reach out locally by contacting the PAEMST Vermont State Coordinator for Mathematics, Lara White, at laradawnwhite@gmail.com.
Vermont State Math Coalition Talent Search & Expanding Horizons

The fourth and final 2017-2018 Talent Search has been posted on the Coalition’s website: www.vtmathcoalition.org. Please encourage your students to give it a try even though they might not have attempted the earlier contests.
This would be a good time to invite a guest speaker to one or more mathematics classes at your school. Click on the “Expanding Horizons” link on the Coalition’s website. (If you have used this resource this year, I would appreciate your feedback.)

In this webinar, the speakers provide a brief overview of the five principles (Getting to Your Core, Making Organizational Meaning, Ensuring Constancy and Consistency of Purpose, Facing the Facts and Your Fears, Building Sustainable Relationships) in Excellence through Equity, focusing on the supporting work and thinking of teachers, teacher leaders, and educators to guide student achievement. The webinar is organized around the five principles and will incorporate questions and dialogue between the participants and speakers.
NCTM & NCSM Annual Conferences
NCTM will be hosting the Annual Meeting & Exposition, Empowering the Mathematics Community, in Washington D.C. from April 25 to 28. With an exciting list of keynote speakers and sessions alike, as well as the much-anticipated release of Catalyzing Change, this is sure to be a memorable event.
Just days earlier, from April 23 to April 25, NCSM will also be hosting their annual conference in Washington D.C. This is another noteworthy national event for STEM educators that you may consider attending.
